DESCRIPTION:
With the assistance of several area fire departments, BVFD assisted Millcreek Police with the search of a missing eleven year old boy Friday evening. The boy had been missing a couple hours before we were requested by Millcreek Police to assist in the search.
Multiple search areas were set up. Crews on foot, motor vehicles and ATV searched nearby woods, trails, fields, neighborhoods, houses, ponds, pools and roadways. Search dogs were used in heavily wooded areas off both Martin Road and Fayland Drive. Several neighbors lent a hand in the search as well. Helicopters were requested to both LifeStar/Stat Medivac and PA State Police.
A command post was set up on Saint Andrew Drive with representatives from Stations 36, 68, 26, 24, as well as Millcreek Police and Millcreek Paramedics working from it.
After nearly two and a half hours after the fire departments arrival, the child was found by Millcreek Police walking on Conrad Road which is approximately two miles from his house. Other than a few minor cuts and scrapes the boy was unharmed and did not need transport to a hospital.
As the search was in progress one of the rescuers from BVFD fell ill to a medical problem and needed to be rescued from the woods. The firefighter was semi-responsive and was extricated from the woods by Belle Valley, Kearsarge and Fairfield firefighters and medics from MPS. That firefighter and another BVFD firefighter suffering from dehydration were both taken to Hamot Medical Center.
